Andrew Gilruth named new chief executive of the Moorland Association

The Moorland Association, which represents grouse moor owners and operators in England and Wales, today announced the appointment of Andrew Gilruth as Chief Executive of the organisation.

Andrew is a leading figure in the conservation and sustainable land management sector and will take up his new post later this month. Andrew succeeds Amanda Anderson who is leaving after serving the Moorland Association for 25 years, 10 of those as Director.

Mark Cunliffe-Lister, Chairman of the Moorland Association, said: “We are delighted to announce Andrew’s appointment and to have attracted someone with tremendous expertise in conservation and moorland management. The experience and knowledge he gained at the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust and more recently as chairman of England’s Regional Moorland Groups will be a great asset to those who are passionate about sustaining the uplands.

“Andrew is an excellent successor to Amanda who served our association with such distinction, and we wish her well for the future.

“Andrew will continue to highlight the positive contribution made by sustainable moorland management. This is an exciting new chapter for the Moorland Association which will further benefit the uplands and all those who rely on them for their livelihoods, whilst continuing to deliver widespread environmental and biodiversity gains”.

Andrew Gilruth said: “I am delighted to be taking on this role. It is down to the efforts of those who live and work in the uplands that makes them such a special place for nature, for tackling climate change and for 40 million people to be able to visit them each year.

“My priority will be to ensure that those communities, and the extensive environmental, social and economic benefits they bring, are protected and recognised for the public good they deliver. We will continue to work closely with all stakeholders to ensure our uplands remain the unmatched national treasure they are.”

Andrew served the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust for more than 14 years as Director of Communications Membership and Marketing. The GWCT is a leading UK charity conducting conservation science to enhance the British countryside for public benefit.
